VIDEO: Introducing the Teen Focus Council

The CHECT Teen Focus Council (TFC) got together for a meeting earlier on in the year and filmed a super quick video to introduce themselves and explain a little about what they do. Perfecto! If you fancy getting involved in the TFC yourself, please email support@chect.org.uk. NB: This video was filmed pre-COVID-19 before social distancing measures were brought in.

Meet the TFC: Harry

About Me I’m a veteran in the CHECT game. They’ve done so much for me and the TFC was a great way for me to help give back to the team that gave me so much during my Rb. I’m about to enter my second year of University, which also means I’m unfortunately coming towards the end of my TFC career. I study journalism in the beautiful city of Sheffield – if anyone is from around there I live in Crookes, in a little student house with my girlfriend and…

Meet the TFC: Beth

Hi, I’m Beth and I’m 18 years old. When I was around twelve weeks old, I was taken to my GP because my mum noticed a white glow in my eyes. I was finally diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma – cancerous tumours in both eyes. I had several rounds of cryotherapy, radiotherapy and chemotherapy before having my right eye enucleated just before my second birthday. I am now 18 and though I’m now in remission, the remaining tumours in my left eye limit my sight to only peripheral vision. Meeting people…

Meet the TFC: Katie

Hi, I’m Katie, and I am 16 years old. I had Rb when I was eight (nearly nine), which, as you probably know, is quite unusual because most people are younger. It does come with the interesting consequence that I remember everything which happened. My right eye was removed, but luckily I had no further treatment. I have a really wide range of things I enjoy. At my secondary school I loved being involved in the extra-curricular life, and ended up being the pupil leader of many music clubs as…

Beth: My Story My story

“I make my loved ones proud no matter how difficult things may get.”

17-year-old Beth Holman shares her experiences of growing up with a visual impairment having been treated for bilateral Rb as a baby. Originally published July 2019 on the CHECT website. I don’t remember my retinoblastoma treatment. I remember the check-ups – long days, the anaesthetic and the McDonald’s I always begged for on our long drive home – but not the treatment. But I know that my family can remember it. This encourages me to constantly make my loved ones proud no matter how difficult things may get. When I…
